D.T.S.R. Facts
The DTSR took note of a recent study by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which showed that leafy green spaces can reduce domestic violence rates, relieve ADHD symptoms, and reduce crime. In fact, city buildings with high levels of greenery had 48% fewer property crimes and 56% fewer violent crimes. City kids with bedroom views of greenery had higher test scores than kids that just looked at pavement.
The same group also believes that people who live in green communities tend to procrastinate less. We’ll get around to investigating this further. Maybe tomorrow.
Good Things Growing: Beautify!
You don't have to be a treehugger, but you've gotta love a tree. Trees gobble up all that nasty CO2 and then turn around and exhale pure, sweet, cool oxygen, right? They're all green and leafy, too. That's inspirational. I'm inspired.
Did you know that just one tree negates over 2,000 pounds of greenhouse gasses in its lifetime? For life forms that basically hang and chill, trees are really pretty busy. This is an ethic that KAB Man tries to live by.
Heck, even grass, shrubs and flowers have a part to play in the beautification game. It's amazing what a little color will do to create pride and community. Green spaces in a community have even been proven to reduce violence and increase public safety. And when places look nice, they attract folks who come out to work, shop and play. And that's good for everyone.
Beautification is what Keep America Beautiful is all about (that's why we named ourselves that, I guess). Beauty is powerful. Getting rid of graffiti, planting trees and other greenery... every little thing you do just makes your community a better place to be.
